Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, her grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father left her family. While she was a small girl, she struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word"association. Ford was intrigued by the field of acting during her teens and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she wasn't a good fit. Ford decided to apply to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place at the third time made an application and secured acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. One of her classmates was Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford did not graduate in 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. The stage was her main focus, and joined The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed because of her stand-up comedic performances in 1996.
